Kayaking & Rafting

Sun Valley is a playground for whitewater rafting and kayaking enthusiasts. The Salmon River to the north and Snake River to the south offer class II, III, and IV rapids, with routes ranging from beginner “scenic floats” to grueling advanced trips. Guided excursions can be arranged through many local outfitters, who also offer rentals of rafts, inflatable kayaks and other gear. A summer visit to Sun Valley would not be complete without taking the opportunity to float one of these outstanding stretches of river.

Class II and III river rapids combine with the natural beauty of the canyon to provide a thrilling river ride. Calm stretches between the rapids provide time for an impromptu water fight, a dip in the river, or just enjoying the scenic beauty and natural history of the Salmon River and the surrounding Sawtooth Wilderness Area. White Cloud's rafting trip is ideal for beginners and return rafters alike. Oar and paddle rafts are available. Oar rafts, where a guide does the maneuvering, are recommended for families with young children and non-swimmers. Adults, teens and older children will enjoy the hands-on experience of working together to navigate the raft down the river.
Kayaking trips also are available throughout the rafting season and can range from moderate to difficult, depending on the water level. Kayaks are best suited to adventurous vacationers who want to experience the river challenge one on one. Idaho kayak trips are restricted to children over the age of 14. You can book a kayak trip for your group with kayaks only or with a paddle raft / kayak combination to suit all members of your group. Either way, experienced, season guides will assist you in navigating your kayak down the river.

White Otter offers fun, safe adventures for vacationers of all ages. Single-day whitewater rafting and kayaking trips run the Salmon River in the Sawtooth Mountains near Stanley. Class IV whitewater is available during the spring run-off in May and June. Class III whitewater continues through the first part of September. For a more relaxed experience, scenic trips are offered until August.
